The Fun About To Begin Again?

I've heard a rumor that Mike & The Mad Dog mentioned today that Michael Morrissey's new book confirms the "reported" June 20, 2005 fight between Jeter and A-Rod in the Yankees clubhouse.

I stress that I cannot confirm this was discussed on WFAN today. It's just something that has been relayed to me via another source.

However, if true, this would fully explain why A-Rod "came out" this spring - because he knew this book was coming and that the fight story, which the Yankees said (at the time) was "absolute fantasy," was included therein. Alex probably wanted to lay the groundwork now for what he would have to explain later on, etc.

The media is going to run with this one. It will be interesting to see how both Jeter and Rodriguez react to questions about the fight - now, almost two years later - if it is indeed true that the story is verified in Morrissey's book.

Never a dull moment, eh?

Comments

Like I said in the previous thread, I wouldn't sweat it too much. Especially now that this has happened two years ago

I don't know if they mentioned it today, but they mentioned it last week. Someone brought it up on Abraham's blog, and Peter seemed to think it was false.

Guess we'll have to wait and see when the book comes out.

Damn... just when I was beginning to finally warm up to Arod, you had to remind me of this post??? Don't mess with the capt... if true that is...

Jen - thanks for the link. Ii should reach out to MM and see if he can verify it. Stay tuned.

Bah, two year old fight between two highly competitive, high testosterone guys doesn't mean much to me. It's not like it's the first time two teammates have gone at it, happens on winning clubs as well as losing ones.

Well, if this fight really did happen, I am quite impressed with whose who were able keep this under wraps. Especially after seeing over the years things like Bonilla offering tours of the Bx, Piniella vs. Dibble, Hal McRae's tirade, so on and so forth.

Amazing that we can't get anything substantial on this fight, yet we can get Giambi's leaked grand jury testimony.

Why use such loaded, inflammatory, sexual language in discussing A-Rod's admitting to the breach between him and Jeter? All that does it sensationalize the story and stir up ridiculous comments in the already homophobic world of professional sports.

Ben - huh? A-Rod "came out" at the start of spring training and said that his relationship with Jeter was not what it seemed and that he was lying about it for the last few years. That's all I meant. "Loaded, inflammatory, sexual language"? And, people say that I over analyze things...

Dude, I think, in this case, you're trying to create something that's not there.

Steve,

Did Mike Morrissey get back to you yet? As one of the messages above noted, Peter Abraham spoke to him about it and he said it wasn't what he wrote.

Also, Peter doubted the veracity of the report.

Let us know when you hear back from Morrissey either way.

I just got a note back from MM. He confirmed that the story of the fight is in the book. However, he said that, in the book, that he writes that the fight very well may have been a non-event. Still, he used the story of it as the jumping off point to a big-picture discussion about the two players' relationship. So, yes, it's in the book, but, he's not saying that it happened for sure.

Thanks for the update Steve.

Is a non-event something that happened but isn't significant, something that didn't happen at all, or something else?

Do you have an idea what he meant? Was there a fight or not?

I got the sense that he didn't see it, so, he can't say that it happened, himself, for sure. He did say that he asked Alex about it, and A-Rod said that he and Jeter got along great and were friends. Of course, this was asked last year.

So Morrissey didn't see it.

An unnamed Producer from Radar magazine is the first person who's written about it and no other reporter witnessed it and reported it.

That should be enough for you.

I hope no one ever gossips about you on a more serious matter.
