Sheff: Only The Strong Survive In Yankeeland
From the Daily News -
Asked what he would tell a fellow player looking for advice on joining the Yanks, Sheffield said, "If winning is everything to you, go there. If it's not, don't. If you can't handle everything else that comes with it, it's not the place for you. There are things that you have to deal with every day, until the next pitch is thrown. So I'd say, if you're not mentally strong, if you don't have a deaf ear to a lot of things, don't go there."
Sheff is right. Last time I checked, the sign hanging above the Yankees entrance to their dugout doesn't read "Give me your tired, your poor. Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door."
And, as a Yankees fan, that's fine by me.

Darryl Strawberry? Dwight Gooden? Brian Bruney? Aaron Small? Steve Howe? Darrell Rasner? Terrence Long?
The Yanks have always picked up players that no one wanted. Smart teams often do.
As for "personality types" there have been many different personalities that have passed through the Yankee clubhouse, be they Bernie, Jeter, Rodriguez or O'Neill.
Sheffield's wrong.

A lot of folk didn't like Shef, but I do. I have a great respect for honesty... and honesty is not always pretty or welcome.
Agree or disagree, he calls them like he sees them, and when he's not in the heat of the moment, I think what he says has validity.
I will miss his trying to use Bowa as target practice. He's still scary at the plate and with a good year or 2, should be HOF bound.

But, only, well, at least most of the time, if they could actually play, and play well in NY - like Gooden, Straw, Howe, etc.
