......Out Of A DeLorean?

From Winding Road -

There’s usually a piece or two of worthwhile John Z. DeLorean memorabilia floating around on eBay, but this one’s a real doozie: the 1978 World Series ring that was awarded to the fallen entrepreneur, who was then a co-owner of the New York Yankees.

Sadly, while DeLorean himself was ultimately unable to make good on the ring’s “Greatest Comeback In History” inscription, that doesn’t mean the next owner can’t enjoy its 21 diamonds, 14 karat gold and unique history.

The starting bid on the ring is $30,000, which is the price of a really, really clean DMC-12.

I would imagine that everyone has that one "thing" that they would love to have, if money were no object - but where there's no way in the world that they could ever afford it, now or ever.

For me, it's always been a "Yankees World Series Ring." It wouldn't matter from what year, or what name was on it, etc. As a Yankees fan, I just think it would be the coolest thing possible to be able to have that ring on your finger (whenever you wanted).

Some may think it's sad to see something like a World Series ring on the market. (Didn't Jose Canseco sell his from the 2000 Yanks?) But, I can understand how it sometime happens.

Take the case of this DeLorean ring. He was an investor. That was his connection to the team. Other than sinking some money into the budget, he contributed nothing to the team. (It's like Billy Crystal and the 2001 Diamondbacks ring that he got - because he was an investor in the team. Crystal had no other contribution towards the D'backs that season.)

There's no emotion tied to this Yankees ring for DeLorean.

In a way, it's the same as your local dry cleaner giving you a calendar at the end of the year - as a reward for doing business with them over the last 12 months. It's nice to get that calendar, sure - but, there's no special attachment that you should have with it.

Whatever you want to do with that calendar after it's yours is your business. It's the same thing here. If DeLorean wants to sell his ring, it's his right.

The only thing that really ticks me off about this whole thing is that I have no chance whatsoever to ever buy this ring (or one like it) - and probably never will in my lifetime - even though it will probably sell for the amount of money that A-Rod makes in one regular season At Bat.

Now, if there's some really well-off person out there who has always had this crazy itch to do something nice for a Yankees fan who they never met....drop me a line. Maybe we can leverage this ring sale to help each other out with taking something off our wild-wish-lists?
