Hank Bauer Passes
From the AP -
Hank Bauer, the tough ex-Marine who set a World Series record with a 17-game hitting streak for the New York Yankees and later managed the Baltimore Orioles to the 1966 title, died Friday. He was 84.
Bauer died in the Kansas City area, where he made his home, Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo said.
Bauer had a nice career - he made some All-Star teams and got some MVP votes. I only really knew him as a retired Yankee. And, seeing him in his senior years, I always thought that his voice never synched up with his tough-guy look and rep. You looked at him expecting to hear Clint Eastwood - but you heard something much higher-pitched (albeit still gravely).
Actually, he seemed to have a fun laugh - and I imagined him to be the great-uncle type that most would like to have around at the family reunion...a guy who experienced a lot of great things, was full of wonderful and funny stories - and who would often crack himself up with those tales as he was entertaining you.
I hope the Yankees bring out his family on Old Timer's Day this year - and that the fans give them a big hand in his honor.
