Giambi's Pipes Get Cold
I feel like I saw this story in a movie once:
Yogi: How's about investing in condominiums? It's safe.
Giambi: Condominiums?
Yogi: Yeah, condominiums.
Giambi: I never use 'em.
Couldn't the news story at least mention the shrinkage factor?
From the Denver Post -
The baseball season is a few months a way, but Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi already had a rainout in his Upper East Side condo. According to the New York Post, a pipe burst, flooding the apartment below. A source said friends staying at Giambi's condo "left some French doors open, which let in the freezing-cold air." Giambi "has been more than a gentleman about it," making sure his neighbor will be reimbursed for damages. He can afford it - he has a $20 million contract with the Yankees.
Is there any truth to the rumor that it was A-Rod who was staying at Giambi's condo, while Alex was in New York pushing his new book for children, and it was Rodriguez who left the doors open which led to the pipes freezing?
Just kidding!
OK, for those who can't take an A-Rod joke at the moment, how 'bout this spin (on this news) instead?
When Red Sox Chief Executive Officer Larry Lucchino was informed of the news on Giambi's condo and of the Yankees star quick remedy to pay for the mishap, he issued the following statement to the media during a conference call: "This is the difference between the Red Sox and the Yankees. A Yankee can make a mistake and open up the checkbook to cover it. We can't afford to make mistakes and then pay our way out of it."
When asked about the Red Sox signing of J.D. Drew following the Coco Crisp contract extension in the year before, and then the Daisuke Matsuzaka mega-million deal two years after Boston signed Matt Clement, Lucchino quickly excused himself from the press conference citing the need seek counsel of Jiminy Cricket.
