Black Sox Boomer?
Geoff Haggerty of Bugs & Cranks took a look at players returning to the Yankees the other day.
As he notes, those really were some messy fingerprints that David Wells left on Game 4 of the 2002 ALDS, Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS, and Game 5 of the 2003 World Series.
Those prints were almost Eddie Cicotte-ish circa 1919 in a way. When Wells was good in the post-season 2002-2003, he was awesome. But, when he was bad, he was awesomely bad.
Boomer does have a bit of a Pete Rose side to his personality at times...ah, nah, this can't be true. Can it?

I wouldn't put it past him, but I doubt that he would do something like that. Bad games happen.
I guess game 5 in '03 was the difference between Wells & Brown? How different would things have turned out if Brown couldn't have gone because of his back?

This is why it's tough being a ballplayer. On the one hand, we castigate them and call them soft if they don't play through injuries. On the other hand, we castigate them and call them selfish if they go out there hurt just to prove their manhood. As fans, we can't have it both ways.
I will never forgive Kevin Brown for taking the ball in game seven of the ALCS (though Torre is truly the one to blame). And for all the good Wells has done for this team, it's hard not to think back to that game five. For all the bungling Torre did in that Series -- and as bad as the hitting was (including in game one, where Wells pitched a good game) -- how different would it have been if Wells kept himself in just SLIGHTLY better shape and was able to make that start?

I'll remember Boomer fondly for 1998 -- perfect game! and his what, 7 inning relief stint in Detroit when Roger was going for win #300.
And Luis Polonia wasn't accused of rape, IIRC, it was statutory rape as she was only 15.
