Yanks To Host 2008 All-Star Game?
From the AP -
Busch Stadium in St. Louis will host baseball's All-Star game in 2009.
Baseball commissioner Bud Selig made the announcement Monday night at the 49th annual dinner hosted by the St. Louis chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
The 2007 All-Star game is scheduled for July 10 in San Francisco and the 2008 event is likely to be played at New York's Yankee Stadium, which is slated to be in its final season.
Back in October, during the NL championship series, Selig said it was very likely that St. Louis would be granted the 2009 showcase.
Only Bud would announce the 2009 site before the 2008 one.
The "old new" Stadium is going to be a zoo in it's final season. An All-Star game will only add to the mess. I think I would rather see them wait until 2010 and then do the All-Star game in the new Bronx digs - where it can be better supported.

What I want to know is how are they going to distribute tickets. I'm a partial season ticket holder in section 39. I'm salivating at this prospect.

I'm just bothered that it took so long for the ASG to return to NYC.
I wish they stuck to some kind of rotation schedule instead of the random hodgepodge they seem to do now.

I'm sure that MLB and FOX will end up controlling the tickets to the game. Maybe the Yankees will end up with 20,000 tickets to play with, or something? But, the odds of them rewarding their everyday fans with them are probably not good.

Ugh, get ready for 347 'candid' camera shots of stars from FOX's upcoming fall lineup.

Probably be lucky to even get that. I seem to remember there was a lottery for tickets when the ASG was in Pittsburgh. I suspect it would be done the same way.

Wearing Yankees hats with the pricetags still on them, no doubt.

//I seem to remember there was a lottery for tickets when the ASG was in Pittsburgh.//
But I also remember that the Pirates gave season ticket holders (who had their tickets before a certain year) the option to purchase their seats for ASG events.

Yeah, but the Pirates probably have something like (only) 642 season ticket holders.

From the MLB site;
During a press conference held Friday afternoon at PNC Park that included brief speeches by Pirates CEO and managing general partner Kevin McClatchy, Pittsburgh Mayor Bob O'Connor and Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato, Major League Baseball executive vice president of business Tim Brosnan outlined details of the All-Star Week events and announced an online lottery for available All-Star Game tickets.
All available tickets for 2006 All-Star Week events at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, including Taco Bell; All-Star Sunday, Gatorade; All-Star Workout Day, featuring the CENTURY 21; Home Run Derby (July 10), and the 77th All-Star Game (July 11), will be sold online through a random system to enable as many fans as possible the chance to purchase tickets.
All-Star Week tickets will be available only through this online system, and customers must purchase tickets in strips, which include the same number of tickets for both ballpark events and All-Star FanFest at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. There is a limit of two strips per customer. In addition, All-Star FanFest tickets are on sale now and can be purchased in individual or group packages.
Beginning at 10 a.m. ET on Wednesday, May 10, fans can visit MLB.com, Pirates.com or any of the other 29 club sites to register for the chance to purchase tickets to the All-Star Events at PNC Park. One entry per person will be accepted. The deadline to register is 5 p.m. ET on Thursday, May 25. Winners will be notified via e-mail no later than May 30. A complete list of rules and procedures will be available on MLB.com and all club sites by May 8.

And from the SF Giants site;
How to Get Tickets
The All Star Game is finally returning to San Francisco after twenty-two years. You have an opportunity to secure what will be the most sought after ticket in the Bay Area if you become a season ticket holder in 2007 & 2008. Again, you must be a season ticketholder if you plan to attend the All Star Game events.

From the Pirates site:
Season Ticket Holder All-Star Game Information
As an additional benefit to Pirates Season Ticket Holders, those who currently have Pirates Season Tickets or purchase them in 2005 and renew them through the 2006 season will have the opportunity to purchase tickets for the 2006 MLB All-Star Game to be held at PNC Park on Tuesday, July 11, 2006.
The following are the Pirates Season Ticket Holder guidelines for the 2006 MLB All-Star Game:
ALL current (FULL and PARTIAL) Pirates Season Ticket Holders who renew their plans for 2005 and again in 2006, will have the opportunity to purchase 2006 MLB All-Star Game tickets.
New 2005 Pirates FULL Season Ticket Holders who renew their plans in 2006 will also have the opportunity to purchase 2006 MLB All-Star Game tickets. All-Star Game ticket options for new Full Season Ticket Holders will be based on availability.
New 2005 Pirates PARTIAL PLAN Season Ticket Holders (minimum 40-game plan) who renew their plans in 2006 will have the opportunity to purchase 2006 MLB All-Star Game tickets based on availability. Due to PNC Park's small capacity, there will be a limited number of 40-game partial plans with All-Star Game options.

Sorry, Raf. Didn't see your second post about SF. I wasn't trying to be snotty about it or nothing. I just remember reading about the Pirates season ticket/ASG thing when I was on their site a couple years ago looking for tickets. I'm sure each club has their own policy regarding season ticket holders and ASG tickets. I think I read that Detroit only gave the option to full season ticket holders. The Pirates seemed to use it as a device to get more people buying season tickets.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see what the Yanks do. I like to think that they would try to get some of their home crowd into the Stadium for the game.

Jen: no offense taken... I hope the Yanks try to get more of the home crowd in for the game, but given the "$$ first, fans 2nd" mentality of MLB, I won't hold my breath. If anything, I suspect the Yanks will do what the Tigers did, or open the ASG to those who are locked into 2009.
Well, at least I'll be able to attend Fan Fest, I guess...
You know, I see the construction, and it really hasn't sunk in yet that in a few years Yankee Stadium will be no more.
