Yanks Ask Melk To Shut It Down

From the AP:

Yankees outfielder Melky Cabrera will skip the Caribbean World Series at the team's request so he can rest up for next season.

Cabrera played the last part of the winter league season in the Dominican Republic and participated in the playoffs, said Mark Newman, the Yankees' senior vice president of baseball operations.

"We've asked that he shut it down at this point. It's been a long year for him," Newman said Tuesday on a conference call to discuss the team's top prospects. "We thought he needed some rest."

Six days in early February is going to make a difference (in terms of rest)? This is strange.

I like the popular (and likely true) conspiracy theory.

YES used to broadcast the CWS. SNY got the rights this year. The Yankees pulled Cano and Melky to keep SNY's ratings down.

Good one!

That might be true NJ. Also, they don't want to risk injury before spring training since he prob isn't warmed up to any gaming at this moment. Remember the WBC, American team sucked because they just came right out and played without building their way into it. Someone got hurt, forgot who it was.

I don't know Russ. What would one extra series do?

Just not being warmed up, I figured they were more prone to injury. I have to stretch before i go running or i have a risk of pulling something... sort of like that?

Where the hell are Melky's stats?

Why is it so hard to get stats from these leagues?

The stats are usually released after play has concluded.

Melky and Cano are raking though. Melky has a bunch of HR.

He's warmed, they've been playing all winter.

Melky hit .333-1-11 this winter for Aguilas. .317-3-8 in the playoffs.

Stats aren't hard to get, you just have to know where to look :)

Quite frankly, I'm shocked the Yanks would even consider letting Cano play in the first place. I realize he was hurt for a chunk of '06, but he's a bona fide stud, not some scrappy utility guy, and they're going to need him for the entirety of 2007 and beyond.

Hope this isn't an safety/insurance policy prior to a trade, unless a #1 pitcher is on the other end of the line.

Why? Jose Reyes is his teammate.
