January 2007 Survey Question # 3
Which young and mostly, for the moment, green gun will be the guy to come out from the Yankees prospect pack this year? Who do you think it will be?
Update, 1/18/07: This poll is now closed. Most seem to think it will be Phil Hughes. To see the results, click on the thumbnail below:

While I disagree with that, it's interesting to know what most Yankees fans think.

I know the scouts don't think that he has awesome-top-of-the-line stuff - but, I just have a feeling that Tyler Clippard might jump up and suprise this year. He got my vote in the poll.

My vote went to Hughes, only because he's the best pitching prospect in baseball and has the best stuff of anyone on that list.
But T-Clip is awesome. I've watched him pitch and he's impossible not to root for. He's a tall, uber-skinny kid who looks like he needs to down power drinks and hit the gym. But for all the doubters this kid has -- and he has a ton -- he always comes out of top. He has incredible strikeout numbers with an average fastball. He still has room to fill out his frame at just 21 -- so with an improved fastball (it sits around 90 now, but it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility to think 92-93) he'll only be better.
I think you're right, Steve, about T-Clip surprising people. Unlike Hughes, he has the innings in his arm. So if he's kicking butt in AAA, we might get to see him in '07.
It was also confirmed by the "Daily News" that Sanchez is going to be a reliever, which I think is a pretty interesting development. They either think he's suited for the 'pen or maybe it has something to do with his health issues. While others have suggested he's been a reliever as well as a starter, he said in the article he's only come out of the 'pen "three times."
By putting a blue-chipper in the 'pen (which reduces his trade value a bit), the Yankees must think he's very near ready or already there. They must see him as the '08 setup man and the closer of the future.
