Happy 31st Birthday, Carl Pavano!
I would like to say that you're now over the hill; but, I can't even remember the last time you were on the hill.

When Carl was last on the mound...
Let's go back in time.
It was Wednesday, June 22, 2005. A day game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Carl Pavano vs. Scott Kazmir.
Yankees' lineup saw Bernie batting second (way to go, Torre!), Ruben Sierra playing left and batting sixth (nice one, Torre!) and Russ Johnson (wow!) playing first and batting seventh. John Flaherty was catching. Cano batted ninth. No Giambi.
Pavano started the day off well striking out the side (all swinging) in the first inning.
Yankees took the lead in the bottom of the first, as Sheffield hit a two-run home run.
Pavano struck out Gomes (swinging) to lead off the second to make it four straight strikeouts.
The Rays tied it at two in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by Johnny Gomes.
Yankees regained the lead in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Cano.
And here's THE inning of note: top of the seventh, Yankees have a one-run lead; Pavano starts the inning by walking Gomes; Taylor strikes out looking; Hollins hits a flyball to centerfield; Hall is hit by a pitch. First and second and no outs and our buddy Nick Green is up. Pavano and Green battle for a while, with Green at two strikes. Pavano is nearing 100 pitches, but Torre leaves him in. Pavano loses the battle to Green as Green deposits his final pitch into left field for a three-run home run. Pavano is taken out for Stanton.
In the bottom of the ninth Cano hits a two-out triple. But Jeter ends the game striking out swinging.
Pavano turns a good game into a bad game with one pitch. Should he have been in there to face Green with two men on and having thrown close to 100 pitches? You decide.
Pavano ends up throw 105 pitches, 70 for strikes. 6 groundballs out, 4 flyball outs, 7 strikeouts. Final line: 6.2 IP, 6 hits, 5 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 2 HR.
The final game Pavano pitched for the Yankees. Will he ever pitch for them again? Who knows...

Whoa, whoa, let's give credit where credit is due, baileywalk....
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- New York Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano gave up one run and one hit over one inning in his first game action since August, a 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night.
That was March 28, 2006. He managed to get Bobby Abreu to ground out before giving up a homer to Chase Utley. I'm pretty sure he also fell down fielding an infield grounder by Pat Burrel, which lead to the infamous "buttocks" injury. I'd imagine that's where the "game used hat" that was for auction on mlb.com came from.
And let's not forget that fans of the Tampa Yankees, Trenton Thunder, and Columbus Clippers got treated to seven starts and 28.2 innings pitched from Cy Pavano this season. And in those 28.2 innings he managed to "scatter" 24 hits! And put up a 27:4 K:BB ratio! That's right, 30 year old Carl Pavano pitched just as well as 20 year old Phil Hughes, facing the same batters...

Unfortunately, while celebrating his birthday with a small collection of supermodels, media flacks, and assistants, Carl Pavano attempted to impress the revelers with his amazing cat-like quickness. He attempted to lick the frosting from the corner of his birthday cake before blowing out the candles and accidentally ignited his hair.
An emergency room nurse at the local hospital, speaking under the condition of anonymity, said that Pavano is undergoing treatment for 2nd and 3rd degree burns to his scalp, face, shoulders, and buttocks, a punctured eardrum by a birthday candle, a dislocated shoulder resulting from wild flailing immediately after ignition, and general rug burns all over his body, possibly from an attempt to extinguish the fire.
A New York Yankee spokesman could not be immediately reached for comment.
