2004 ALCS Game 7 Comments
I was just having a conversation with someone about the 2004 ALCS which gave me an idea for a little retro-entry today. WasWatching.com was not around in 2004. But, had it been, you probably would have found something like this posted here on October 21, 2004:
Just about 5 minutes before Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS, I got an idea. In order to try and keep myself calm during the game, and not wake up my 6 month old and my 28 month old with moaning and hollering, I decided that I was going to keep score of this game, for fun, while watching it on TV. And, while I was keeping score, at the end of each half-inning, I made comments on the back of the scorecard. Here is what those comments ended up being:
Top 1st - Boston 2 New York 0. Again this series, Boston gets the needed hit with 2 outs.
Bottom 1st - Boston 2 New York 0. FOX graphic says it all - Sheffield had only 1 hit in Games 4, 5 & 6 (combined) in this ALCS.
Top 2nd - Boston 6 New York 0. Sox got 4 runs on only 2 hits in this frame.
Bottom 2nd - Boston 6 New York 0. Through 2 innings, Boston has 13 plate appearances and New York only has seven.
Top 3rd - Boston 6 New York 0. FOX had a dugout shot of Boston's Pokey Reese. He makes Willie McGee look pretty.
Bottom 3rd - Boston 6 New York 1. When was the last time A-Rod hit the ball out of the infield?
Top 4th - Boston 8 New York 1. Against Vazquez, Johnny Damon is Babe Ruth.
Bottom 4th - Boston 8 New York 1. Three up, three down. 15 outs left to New York's season.
Top 5th - Boston 8 New York 1. Wasn't New York just three outs away from winning this LCS back in Game 4?
Bottom 5th - Boston 8 New York 1. Through 5 innings, Boston has 30 plate appearances and New York only has 18.
Top 6th - Boston 8 New York 1. Loaiza has been the best pitcher of the night so far for NY. Imagine that?
Bottom 6th - Boston 8 New York 1. Through six, Lowe has allowed just one hit to NY and just 3 outs made it to the outfield.
Top 7th - Boston 8 New York 1. Is Pedro really coming into this game?
Bottom 7th - Boston 8 New York 3. The mini-rally here was probably the Yankees best and last shot to get back into this game.
Top 8th - Boston 9 New York 3. Tom Gordon is a post-season Ed Whitson.
Bottom 8th - Boston 9 New York 3. Three times in 8 innings played tonight, Jeter/A-Rod/Sheffield went 3 up, 3 down, in an inning.
Top 9th - Boston 10 New York 3. I think the only fans left in Yankee Stadium are members of the Red Sox Nation.
Bottom 9th - Boston 10 New York 3. Boy, am I glad that I sold my two tickets to this game. Sorry Dave (to whom I sold the tickets).
Now, three other comments flashed into my mind at various points during the game that did not make the official "back of the scorecard" scrawl, Nonetheless, here they are:
1. Can anyone attend a baseball game these days and not use their cell phone while watching the game? I don't think that I saw one shot of the fans in the stands where someone was not on the phone.
2. Think we'll hear any more from the Sox management team about the unfair advantage that New York has because of their high payroll?
3. Since 2001, the team that knocked the Yankees out of the playoffs has gone on to win the World Series. Will Boston become the 4th team in a row to do this?
Lastly, here, in closing, of course, congrats to the 2004 Boston Red Sox, and all of their fans. Yes, they were the favorite to win the ALCS according to Vegas and others (coming into the series); but, to win it after being down 3-0 is incredible. Enjoy this win tonight. But, just as important, remember Game 4. Every series has a turning point and Game 4 was that point for this ALCS. Always remember that stolen base by Dave Roberts in the 9th inning. That one play just may have been the biggest play in the history of the Sox (if they go on to win the World Series).
And some say that steals are overrated.

==========
They are :)
That game was over early. I remember watching that game thinking that I was in the twilight zone somewhere... What? Is this really happening? In Yankee Stadium?
Note the jump in Pedro's velocity during the Olerud at bat.
Loaiza had a decent series, looking back. He really didn't do much to distinguish himself during the regular season.
I hate the cellphone thing during ballgames too, but I guess it's a sign of the times...

Raf, I think Steve's point was about the steal from game 4. Not game 7.
Steve, are you just a glutton for punishment? Why do want to play make believe and relive that f'ing abortion?

It's very civil, Steve. My comments from that game are to strong even for a sailor's blog.

Garcia: I know. I guess I could have worded my entry a bit better for clarity. Matter of fact, I don't think there was a steal in game 7; at least there wasn't a need for one...
Even though Roberts' steal was huge, fact was it only tied the game. Yanks had opportunities to win games 4-6 and didn't execute for whatever reason.

Anyone else sick of hearing about the lauded, amazing, series-changing steal by Roberts? Isn't it more amazing that everyone knew it was coming and the Yankees did nothing about it?
It might be the most important stolen base in Red Sox's history, but its legacy is partially bullshit. Roberts' stolen base kept THAT game from ending, but the Red Sox still had to win two more games with their backs against the wall. Schilling still came back with his now-famous ketchup-smeared ankle. Lowe still pitched like an ace in game seven.
And let's not even talk about all that Papi did.
So, yeah, an important steal -- but everything that happened after that steal is more amazing to me.
It's somewhat shocking that Torre didn't get his ass fired after that series. Who knows -- a pitch-out might have prevented the worst collapse in baseball history. For all the wonderful things this franchise has done, it will forever have that on its resume. When everyone is talking about Jeter and Mo and Bernie (and maybe even A-Rod) they will always have that to bring up. And the Red Sox, with all their failure, will always have it to rub in our faces.
God, Steve, thanks for bringing this up. It put me in a GREAT mood. Ha ha ha.

bailey, didn't Mo throw over twice to first base, then Posada's throw was right there but Roberts just eeked it out. Mo had already walked Millar, I think the gameplan was to get outs and not worry about the runner and allow the Sox to win the game. I didn't have a problem with the strategy there.
So you fire Torre after what? A four game losing streak? He was gold before that, but all of a sudden he's garbage and should have been fired after that series.
The Yanks played their asses off. For me, game 5 was the best game I've ever seen in my life. It started at 5 and at 11 p.m it was still going. I was f'ing drained after Sunday's game 4 and Monday's game 5, I remember.
I hate the Sawx won...but oh well. They were the better team and I've come to grips with that already. They did the impossible and good for them.

There is something to be said about the Red Sox being the better team in October 2004 - and the failure in that ALCS was theirs - for allowing the Yankees to win the first three games.
At least that's what I keep telling myself.

That's been a trend these last couple years - the Yankees bats just going to sleep in big playoff games.
The Red Sox were the better team in '04. I was very surprised that they didn't win it in '03. Quick - would you take the House that Boone Rebuilt moment knowing what was in store the next years?

Steve, I think I hate you more than liver for bringing this day up again. It was magnified since I live in Boston and remains one of the worst days of my life.
Maybe it is little solace that the Red Sox have not won another playoff game since that 4th game of the World Series and have completely diamantled the team that won it all.
Other than Ortiz, Manchild, Schilling, Varitek, Mirabelli, Wakefield and Timlin, is there anyone else left from the winning team?

----------
Torre was "gold"? When was he EVER gold? Torre's Yankees haven't won a World Series since 2000. Torre put Jeff Weaver into a game in the 2003 World Series instead of Mo Rivera. That's not "gold."
Torre's not a good manager -- in fact, he's horrible. He's a push-button guy and he's not creative in any way and anything outside the norm is beyond him. He won in 1996 and from 1998-2000 because of the TEAM he had. Mostly because of its amazing pitching. Cone, Clemens, Wells, Pettitte and El Duque made up for all the Torre bungling. As soon as Torre didn't have a stacked pitching staff, he was exposed. His decision-making borders on the bizarre at times.
When it comes to Torre and this team, people tend to wear their rose-tinted glasses. This team has stuck with him two years too long.
He's the same guy doing the same things to drive everyone nuts. Hopefully this is his last year and Phil Hughes and the other young pitchers will make some other manager look like a genius -- the way Pettitte and Clemens and Wells made Torre seem like one.

Can anyone please name a manager that they like? PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!! F'ING PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't stand this crap already about how bad Torre is?
In my job, I can't bitch about something having an alternative that will solve what I'm bitching about. Don't give me what Bill F'ing James says, or anyone else. Give me a name? If Torre were THIS manager then we would have WON 3 more championships.
Torre is a leader in that clubhouse. If you look at the games he's won then you know it hasn't been all luck. Playoffs, playoffs..don't give me that crap. Playoffs have a lot to do with luck and we just haven't had much of that lately. The Yanks won a championship with a 86 win team and their best all-around team (2002) lost in the wild card round to the Angels.
Yeah...Torre is f'ing awful. I'd like to see what your manager says about your ability to do everything 100% correct.
I get pretty good reviews at work and I probably get about 75% of my work done correctly - at first pass. Yeah..your perfect. I'm sure you poop diamonds and your urine is gold too.

Garcia, I say this with all due respect, but whether it's understanding why non-family members go to funerals or people taking steroids, your opinions are completely immature, and your way of expressing those opinions utterly infantile.
So I will do us both and favor and simply not comment on anything you write. I think it will save both of us some time.
