Josh Phelps
In the news today:
1B JOSH PHELPS was selected by the New York Yankees off the Orioles’ AAA Norfolk roster. Phelps was signed by the Orioles as a minor league free agent on November 10.
More on this via Peter Abraham -
Brian Cashman on Phelps: "Our scouts saw him a lot in the International League and liked him. He'll compete for a job out of spring training. It's worth a look."
I love this move. I remember reading about Phelps in Fantasyland. He's a bright guy. He was on the cover of the Baseball Prospectus 2003 book, if I recall correctly. Maybe that was a curse? Still, he's hit LH-pitching in the past. This could be a sleeper move for the Yankees. At the worst, there's no downside whatsoever. It's a smart pick-up.

Is this the same Phelps that was once a hitting prospect in the D-Rays sytem? I vaguely remember him being supposed to break out back in 2001 or 2002. I think he even hit 20 or more homers in a season around that time.

MJ - he broke in with a bang with the Blue Jays - was traded to the Indians. Then signed with Tampa as a FA. Then signed with the Tigers. Then signed with the O's.
Yes, he's been around. And, yes, maybe he's the RH Kevin Maas? But, it's no biggie to bring him in and see what he can offer.

I always picked up Phelps in MLB 2K6. He RAKED.

It's a good pickup, but if the Yankees don't intend to keep him on the roster for the entire year, they have to offer him back up to the O's, who will take him. So Andy Phillips will have some real competition as the righty in the first base platoon this spring.
Phelps can hit, but what sort of glove is he? If he's basically a DH type, what's the point?
I'm still hoping the Yankees consider Craig Wilson (Torre be damned).

Aren't most Rule V guys a bit younger than 29? Dunno, maybe it's my impression? That being said, for $50K, this is a no-brainer.
I wouldn't mind seeing Craig Wilson again (1B/OF/C + hits LHP) but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen.

Maybe it is just me but I would rather see anybody but Andy Phillips. Is there any evidence to support that Andy Phillips will be anything but career minor leaguer? I have seen nothing from him that would suggest he belongs in the big leagues at all, nevermind on the Yankees. Bring on Josh Phelps.

The best part of this move is we didn't have to give up Jay Buhner and his rocket of an arm to get him either.
Anyone think George is saying today: "My baseball people love Josh Phelps bat. They kept saying Josh Phelps, Josh Phelps."

Thank God for that. I never want to see Craig Wilson in our uniform again, unless it is as a batboy. Craig Wilson has always put up respectable numbers, but it seemed like once he put on the pinstripes, he completely lost his ability to do everything. He couldnt even apply a simple tag out of a runner when Villone picked a guy off first against the Sox.

I'd rather have Andy Phillips than Craig Wilson. He needs to learn more patience and how to strike out less. But when you can hit an opposite field home run off Johan Santana, despite Johan's early season struggles, only to get it robbed by Hunter, then you've got to have some potential, or at least more potential than New York Yankee Craig Wilson.

Don't sleep on Wilson because of 100ABs in a Yankee uniform.
Remember, while Phillips was mashing AAA pitching in '04 & '05, Wilson had 4 seasons in the bigs.

And come to think of it, if no one has picked him up by then, do the Yanks invite Wilson to ST? Couldn't be a bad thing to have Wilson, Phillips & Phelps competing for the same spot on the roster.

I dont think Andy Phillips has ever mashed anything in his life unless it was potatoes. Certainly not a ball and definitely not with his bat.

Why the focus on a new first baseman? Doesn't it make more sense to move Matsui or Melky to first?
