Doug Mientkiewicz

With Andy Pettitte joining fellow ground-ball specialist Chien-Ming Wang, the Yankees have shown an interest in slick-fielding first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz.
Even though Mientkiewicz is a left-handed hitter and the Yankees are seeking a right-handed bat at first, he isn't an automatic out against lefties (.274 last year). Hideki Matsui and Jason Giambi handle left-handers well, and Mientkiewicz is considered a defensive upgrade at first over right-handed hitting Shea Hillenbrand, who has talked with the Yankees.
"He catches the ball, that's a lock," a scout said of 32-year-old Mientkiewicz, who batted .283 with four homers and 43 RBIs for the Royals last season.
33-years old. Zero stick. Bad back.

No comment on Mientkiewicz because it's a tad too depressing to think of him out there when Andy Phillips provides the same sort of non-ability (and for less money).
But speaking of the shitty NY tabloids, did anyone read Lupica's take on the Andy Pettitte signing? What an asshole that guy is.

Lupica really is a scumbag. His hate for the Yankees is SO naked at this point it's a joke. He trashes them and Cashman at every step. The Yankees could build a hospital for one-legged war victims and he would find fault. He's like the ultimate Red Sox fan boy. I still remember, with great amusement, his article when the Sox traded for Josh Beckett. It was like a love letter written by a ten year old.
Bondy in the "Daily News" also crapped on the Pettitte deal. A lot of people say "the Yankees don't have an ace," which forgets about Wang, and then say "they just have two and threes." Truthfully, who has more than one ace? If you have one stopper and two guys behind him who are capable of winning, then your chances are good.
In that same article, Bondy called Wang a "finesse" pitcher and then compared him to Kenny Rogers.
Think he's even seen him pitch?
I still can't get over that -- Wang as a "finesse pitcher."

Yikes, Doug Mientkiewicz is
1. impossible to spell
2. the worst hitter since Helen Keller
3. a complete jerk, as with the Red Sox ball issue
4. an injury risk
No, no, no, a thopusand times no.
As awful as he is, Shea Hillenbrand is worse. Besides merely acceptable hitting, he cannot walk, run the bases, nor field.

There's just no pleasing guys like Lupica. It's pointless even trying to craft a rational argument against him since he's not operating in any realm of logic or reason.
Here's what I know: the Yanks have a gray-beard rotation with a high degree of injury risk. But, assuming they sign Igawa, they have eight potential starters (Wang, Moose, Andy, RJ, Pavano, Igawa, Rasner & Karstens) for five spots. RJ and Andy will be free agents at the end of the season. So, by my count, the Yanks have depth, a surplus for trading possibilities, and flexibility at the end of the year. Lupica needs to shut the F up and just accept that he'll have to come up with tons of columns on why the Yanks are bad for baseball again.

Love the Mike Lupica stuff. I have a theory that Lupica has a template for 6 different columns. They are:
1. Bash the Yankees
2. Bash the Knicks and Isiah
3. Bash the Giants and Shockey or Burress
4. Praise the Mets and Reyes and Wright
5. Blow smoke up the Red Sox ass as to how great they are
6. His Random Thoughts articles
That is all he is capable of
