Jason Armstrong

I was just looking at the stats for Jason Giambi, this season, by month:

JasonG.jpg

Giambi was off the charts in April. During May, Jason didn't hit - but, he still got his walks. In June, it was homer-or-bust for Giambi - and nothing else at all. This month, to date, Jason has been MIA with the stick.

Besides the 4-month decline in OBA, each and every month, what I find interesting is the power trend here.

Power in April. None in May. Power in June. None in July.

It's almost as if Jason Giambi is on some sort of power cycle here.......hmmmmmm........naaaaaah, just a co-winky-dink, right?

And just when was that D'back pitcher caught with HGH? Any correlation? (Note: correlation does not mean causation).

If we're getting an every-other-month useful Jason then someone might want to tell him that we'd rather he have his slump in August and come back with a good September. Being on schedule for a good October won't mean much if he buries us the month before and we don't even make it.

(All of this is tongue-in-cheek, of course!)

Ugh, totally idiotic. Your real concern should be that Giambi has been declining by the month. He keeps hitting home runs, but he's walking less and getting fewer non-home run hits. The "cycle" is only in the home runs -- and it's easy for a guy like Giambi to hit mistake pitches out of the ballpark even when he's struggling. More than likely, he hit less mistakes off of better pitchers in those months.

With the testing in place right now, Giambi would probably have to be doing HGH, which isn't all that effective. It has to be used with other steroids to really get a good effect, and with the testing in baseball it's impossible now. Plus, if you look at Giambi's body, which is soft, you can probably guess the guy isn't on anything. If you take a look at him when he was on 'roids, he looked like he had zero body fat.

You might also want to think about the fact that the guy had a tumor almost certainly caused by his steroid use. No matter what you think about Giambi, I'm sure you have to figure he favors his life over home runs.

It seems since all the Yankees injuries happened that he hasn't been at 1B as much. How are his splits as to when he's in the field and when he DH's?

It's about even this year.

Well, I wouldn't say it's "even."

At first: 145 AB, .269 BA, .443 OBP, .579 SLG, 13 HR, 35 RBI, 39 BB, 36 K.

As DH: 144 AB, .243 BA, .374 OBP, .597 SLG, 15 HR, 42 RBI, 28 BB, 36 K.

So he's getting on base less frequently -- much less frequently -- as a DH. He's put up slightly better power numbers as a DH. But that 70-point drop in his on-base is disturbing.
