Biggest Disappointment In 1st Half
On The Yankees Beat got me thinking about this question. Who was the Yankees biggest disappointment in the first half of 2006?
The candidates:
Shawn Chacon
Kyle Farnsworth
Randy Johnson
Hideki Matsui
Andy Phillips
Gary Sheffield
Tanyon Sturtze
Bernie Williams
Well, Matsui and Sheffield got hurt trying. So, you can't get on their case too much. And, I wasn't expecting all that much from Phillips, Sturtze and Bernie - so, it's hard to disappointment when you're not expecting much.
This leaves Chacon, Farnsworth and Johnson.
Farnsworth has been about average - according to the stats. While I expected more from him - he hasn't been a flat-out bust. This leaves Chacon and Johnson.
Because of the expectations that he brings, Randy Johnson has to be the Yankees biggest disappointment in the first half of this season. I know that sounds strange - considering that he's won 10 games in the first half. But, it's those other 9 starts of his - including four against the Blue Jays and Mets - where he earned this title.
Basically, so far this season, Johnson has had twice as many bad starts as one would expect from him. And, that's a big disappointment.
On the bright side, Johnson has a chance to be the Yankees biggest help in the second half of the season - if he puts together a long string of starts where he's a winner each time out.

Funny, I view Farnsworth as the bigger disappointment despite his average stats. I wish the Yankees had thrown serious money at Tom Gordon just to give him something to think about between closing for a non-contender or setting up for a team that has serious playoff aspirations. Farnsworth is decent at times but I don't fully trust him in June so how can I really have that much faith in Sept./Oct.?

If Johnson's 2nd 1/2 is anything like his 1st, expect a lot more disappointment.
Johnson has stunk up the joint 40% of the time. In his 17 decisions, he's lost 7 games (41%). In his total 19 games started, in 8 games, he didn't make it past the 6th inning (42%). He's given up 5 or more ER's in 7 games. Overall 5.13 ERA
And, in the 10 games he won, the Yanks scored 10, 5, 6, 6, 4, 8, 10, 7, 9 and 15. Shawn Chacon would still be in the rotation with that kind of support!

"Biggest disappointment" relates to one's personal expectation. Given Randy's age, I expected him to be worse than last year, so I'm not terribly disappointed. His ERA is bad, but he has gobbled up a lot of innings.
I thought Farnsworth would be as good as Gordon was last year. He's been a major disappointment to me.
Chacon was the Yanks best pitcher last year. I expected some regression to the mean, but didn't think he's totally fall apart. He's my biggest Yankee disappointment.

I've spent the whole season expecting to see Bernie Williams on the bench or on a DH platoon, instead of butchering play after play in the field. I'm very disappointed in myself.

I hate having to defend Chacon all the time, but seriously, why did everyone just cast him off? His biggest problem is lack of regular work since being reactivated. Before his injury, he had 4 starts in a row that were really solid. He left early in the Sox game and got a ND after 4-2/3, but he was really pitching well after a rough start to the season. Since he went on the DL (which, mind you, Sheff/Matsui are getting a pass on since they can't compete), he's not been the same. He also pitches on 7-9 days rest. What do you expect?
It's easy to doubt a guy that isn't lights out, but he had a great second half last year, and he really fights out there. He pitched his next start with a DL stint injury to his leg. That's the kind of fire Jeter shows. He's hurt, he wants to try to get through it.
Sheff and Matsui are going to be a shell of themselves for at least 2 weeks, if not longer when (if) they return. Neither has logged many innings, and they weren't looking too sharp then. The team, however, will be patient with them because they're great players. Chacon just gets the hook and is tagged a one-time deal. At this point, is there really a better option? Chacon has as much potential to be a solid starter as the AAA/AA options do. He's done it recently and not just in the minors. He's disappointing, but has he been worse than RJ (when he was giving up 3+ runs in the first inning of every start)? He's still going out there every 5 days (and improving every time out). Give the guy a chance. Even Jaret Wright got a chance this year and he looked miserable last year.
Chacon's "attitude" problem (if it even exists) is due to the fact that he needs to work on a regular basis to stay sharp. He's getting thrown to the wolves. I'd hate to see him get traded and then go flourish somewhere else where he's given a chance. THAT would be the real disappointment.
