Yanks Acquire Outfielder!

The rest of the Golden Baseball League won't have to worry about facing Victor Hall of the Reno Silver Sox, because his contract was purchased by the New York Yankees on Tuesday.
Hall, a 25-year-old center fielder, was batting .362 with three home runs, not to mention leading the league with 23 runs scored and 15 stolen bases through the first 16 games.
Victor Hall. He's this year's version of Vince Faison.

And in the Northern League, the Fargo-Moorehead Redhawks released RHP Rick Hummel and the Joliet Jackhammers released LHP Casey Wenke.
It's kind of sad to read about a guy getting released from an independent league team. If you aren't even that good, . . .

Steve, it's always funny how you get upset about these minor-league signings. No one expects these guys to make it to the big club. They just have to fill out the minor-league rosters. And if they catch that one-in-a-million chance of maybe getting a bench player or a part-time player out of it, so be it. Vince is actually having a nice year with the Thunder. That signing worked out because he's helping that team win -- and it's important for the players on that team -- Hughes, Clippard, Cox, Eric Duncan -- to know what it's like to win.

You know what, I'd never thought of it like that but I really agree with Bailey. Winning at every level is good for the players.

I only get upset, because, if they drafted better, they would not even have spots in the minors to place these guys.
It just seems, to me, that they're looking to fill holes on rosters with guys off the scrap heap when they should have young, able, prospects already filling those spots.

Yeah they should have "...young, able, prospects already filling those spots..." but since they probably don't they might as well try something out as long as it's not taking away from the development of a player with more potential.

Every system, even the Dodgers and Angels, trawls the independent leagues and snaps up rejects from other systems, Steve. Consider that out of 40 odd rounds every year in the draft, most teams only sign barely half of their picks. Many, many more of the players that fill out minor league rosters come from the pool of foreign and domestic undrafted players. The Yankees, unlike some smarter organizations in the late '90s and early oughts, have done very little in picking up 5 year rule players and independent league types...until recently. It's a 1 in 1,000 chance but, it can't hurt to, at the very least, acquire inexpensive "organizational" talent.
