Jesus Is Coming?
Just some Jesus Colome news from OurSports Central -
The Trenton Thunder, the Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, announced that RHP Jesus Colome has been promoted to Columbus (AAA of the International League) and RHP Francisco Butto has been transferred to Trenton.
Colome went 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in three appearances for Trenton. He was signed by the Yankees to a Minor League contract on April 15, 2006.
For those who don't know it, Jesus Colome is Spanish for "Tanyon Sturtze."

Unfortunately, this has everything to do with the big club. Butto was great with AA Trenton and hadn't given up a run with AAA Columbus. So there was no reason to demote him. Colome, meanwhile, had three walks in four innings at Trenton. Plus, what's the point of bringing him up to the big club? Would it be at the expense of Matt Smith or Beam? Both are better than Colome. And why not promote Cox to AAA and then the bigs? He has a 13/22 BB/K in 44.2 IP and has started to get a lot of grounders.
If they send down Beam or Smith to bring up Colome, it might just be time to give up on Cashman. (In the Yankees' world, a guy who's played in the bigs is better than a guy who's only been in the minors, no matter how bad the guy was in the bigs. "Major-league experience" is incredibly important to them -- even if the experience was getting your brains knocked in.)

Look at it this way: at least Colome won't be taking innings away from Cox at Trenton. If Colome's at AAA, he's not cutting into anyone's playing time.

They just want to see how well he's progressed (they've been "working" with him on changing his arm slot...over the top rather than 3/4 sidearm...in order to help him get some tilt on his breaking stuff). If anything, the organization's too conservative, making sure their prospects get enough work at a particular level before promoting them. Mike's right, this is as much about guys in AA getting innings as it is about seeing what Colome can do at Columbus.
