Today's Special: Sturtze Flambéed ala Torre

Finally, ready for serving after a year in the making.....

From Yankees.com -

Yankees right-hander Tanyon Sturtze may be done for the season. The veteran pitcher underwent an MRI exam on Monday that revealed a slight tear in the rotator cuff area of his right shoulder.

"Unfortunately, depending on what he decides to do, it's probably going to cost him the rest of the year," Torre said of the 35-year-old pitcher who owned a 7.59 ERA because he gave up 10 runs on 17 hits in just 10 2/3 innings.

Torre, who was disappointed that Sturtze didn't inform the team of his shoulder woes before Saturday, said that the first thing he stresses to his pitchers in Spring Training is that hiding an injury can hurt both the pitcher and the team.

"Don't try to be a hero, you're going to shorten your career," said Torre, recalling his message. "I'm sincere when I tell these guys that, because there's no game that's more important than somebody's career."

Just be sure to save some room for today's dessert special: Joe's Proctor Pie - baked on the premises daily!

I'm definitely worried about the future of Scott Proctor if we continue to see him out there every single day.

As for Sturtze, I don't think this was Torre's doing -- the guy was never good throughout his entire career. All we saw was Sturtze reverting to stats befitting the back of his baseball card.

Hopefully this season-ending injury is enough to get him cut from the team. If some other team wants to take a chance on him, by all means...

The thing with TS is well, yes, he always sucked. But, *what if* the Mo factor did help him come out of nowhere (like Proctor did this year)? Assuming the Rivera Counseling helped, then clearly Torre abused him and burnt him out.

Flashes from the past. Wasn't it Steve Bedrosian who went from Cy Young to sayonara under Mr. Torre's watch? Except in those days, no one expected relief pitchers to have consecutive good seasons much less a string of them. How things have changed or have they?

Actually don't you have it backwards? Bedrosian won his Cy Young for the Phillies in 1987, several years after he was managed in Atlanta by Joe Torre.

This is the best summary of Torre's pen abuse, IMHO:

Steve, reading that and looking at where we stand right now in 2006, the hope is that we can manage to only fall 4 or 5 games back by the time this 3 week gauntlet is over. There is no way to stop Torre from being Torre, so we'll need another save job from Cashman. Probably not likely. As Daffy Duck said to Bugs, "Yeah, but I can only do this once."
