Nick Green
From the Sports Network:
The Yankees recalled pitcher Matt Smith from Triple-A Columbus and sent down outfielder Kevin Reese to the Clippers before the game. New York also acquired infielder Nick Green from Tampa Bay for cash considerations.
Nick Green? Sure, he's an OK second baseman with the glove. And, he can do a good job with the bat when he's facing left-handed pitching. But, where does he fit into the Yankees big league team?
Maybe the Yankees feel that Robinson Cano has been over matched by LHP and want a platoon partner for him? But, who would go to make room on the roster, Andy Phillips?
It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
UPDATE, 12:04 am ET, 5/25/06:
Never mind - I just saw that the Yankees assigned Green to to Triple-A Columbus.

Is this flurry of minor league signings a search for major league replacements or some arcane strategy to get trading chips to acquire someone? Is there a trading partner out there that would consider, say, 1 decent prospect (Duncan? White? Beam?)along with a bouquet of Pena, Durazo, Hidalgo, Long, and Green? Not likely. But Jim Bowden is still the GM of the Nationals.

I'm wondering if they're stocking Columbus with vets so that they can push some others, like Duncan, back to Double-A?

Duncan's on the DL, but he was barely above the Mendoza line any way. You may be right Steve. Put Duncan in AA where he can have success and thus be a useful chip.
