Butt, Carl.........
From the Post:
Carl Pavano is on hold again. And nobody knows for how long.
Instead of injecting Pavano's sore butt with cortisone yesterday, the Yankees sent an MRI of Pavano's rear end to back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles. Watkins examined Pavano before spring training when the right-hander complained of back trouble.
"We wanted to make sure there is nothing we are missing," GM Brian Cashman said yesterday. "We will take [Watkins'] recommendation and hopefully we can proceed, but it also could be that [Watkins] wants to see him. We don't know."
The MRI, which was taken Thursday night after Pavano worked an inning in a minor league spring training game, didn't detect anything wrong in the lower left butt that Pavano fell on Tuesday night when he tumbled fielding a ball near first base. The results were overnighted to L.A. yesterday.
Until the Yankees hear from Watkins, Pavano is shut down.
Carl, at this point, just put on a dress and get on with your life. Pavano makes Mussina seem like Mr. Rough-n-Tumble.
If they ever want to do a baseball version of Transamerica, Carl is their, uh, man (?).........

Carl, asprin can get rid of those headaches.
I used to think of Pavano, "well, at least he's not Kevin Brown." Now I'm not sure that that is a positive.

True, while Brown sucked, at least he tired.

Steve, I'm surprised that a man whose wife has given birth to two children would go after a player's fragility in such sexist terms. You should know that women are way tougher than Carl Pavano. ;-)

Excellent point Carla.
Mea culpa.

I don't get why people dog Pavano about this stuff. It's not him -- it's the decision-makers (Cashman, etc.) who are holding him back. Pavano wants to pitch. They just won't let him. They made him wait weeks before he could pitch BP and then get into a game. He finally gets into a game, pitched one inning, and then they limit him to just one more inning in his next trip. Now they sideline him because of a bruised ass. Give me a break. They are (consciously or not) making Pavano look horrible. They need to just let this guy pitch.
Of course, people think this all sounds like a bullsh-t injury and that Carl is weak and being a baby, but if his hip is truly hurt (and not just his butt), then this could be serious -- because every time you drive forward to pitch you flex your thigh and glutes, which means he could inadvertently alter his motion, which led to his shoulder problems last year (a sore ass can, in fact, lead to back and shoulder pain -- if you're a pitcher).

I'm not doubting the veracity of his injuries. Pavano was brittle before he became a Yankee, it should come as no suprise to anyone if he's brittle as a Yankee.

Does falling as violently as he did and ending up with a bruise really make him "brittle"?

You may want to google "Carl Pavano injury history"

You seemed to suggest this injury -- the "butt" injury -- in and of itself was proof he was brittle, which I disagree with.

I agree with bailey on this one. The Yanks are actually usually pretty good about this kind of stuff. IF he is in any pain, why risk it? It's early in the season, and Pavano has been off the team for such a long period of time that rushing him back isn't even worth the gamble. I'm not saying Pavano's value as a pitcher is high, I'm just saying what's the point of bringing him back 2 weeks earlier if he's going to miss the rest of the season because of it. Better safe than sorry. Plus, it's obvious that Jaret Wright is a competent replacement...

No, I'm suggesting this injury, along with his other injuries are proof that he's brittle. He has 8 years in the league, and he was heathy in two of them. I'd say he's brittle.
