Moose Road Kill
From TSN:
No one enjoys playing in Yankee Stadium quite as much as Mussina. Over the past two seasons, he has gone 15-7 with a 3.72 ERA and 1.21 WHIP at home. Get him away from the Bronx, and Mussina had a .500 record with a 5.29 ERA and 1.49 WHIP.
Hey, who was that starter for the Yankees in Game 5 of the ALDS last year, on the road? You know, the guy they left out there so that he could make that road start? How did he do in that game anyway?

He was also the guy passed up for Jaret Wright in the final game of the season...despite his excellent history in Fenway against the Red Sox. Oops, no extra home game in the ALDS. Sheesh, Steve, let's not rehash this again. I've had enough of a beating about the head and shoulders from the Torre idolators and Stottlemyre acolytes. Logic and reason are never enough to win this debate.

We'll never know how Moose would have done because Bubba crashed into Sheffield and that made the roof cave in. If I remember right, Moose gave up a home run to Anderson in that game, but otherwise all the hits off him were bloopers. If Bubba doesn't recklessly go after that ball and knock Sheffield flat, the game has a different result.
And did you forget who won the first game of the ALDS on the road? It was Moose. The same one who saved their butts on the road in 2001 in Oakland.
I'm not saying you're doing it, Steve, but it is odd that most people blame Moose for the failure last year. Moose actually won a game. What did RJ do? His performance was pitiful. Personally, I think he needed one more day off, because he threw 121 pitches in his last start against the Sox. If Chacon pitches game three and RJ goes game four, I think the Yankees win that series 3-1.

Can't blame one person...
Even though Moose had a less than stellar start, come 9th inning, Yanks still had 1st & 2nd no one out. They were in a position to take the lead, maybe win the game.
sh!t happens

Bubba was reckless on that play? Looked like hustle to me, FWIW.

Moose has been a horse for us since he signed: 77-46 with a 3.86 ERA over 5 years. Given the pitching market nowadays, his $88.5M deal looks like a bargain.
He's saved the Yanks before (1-0 win facing elimination against the A's in Game 3 of 2001 ALDS, 3.1 scorless relief innings in Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS), and you can't blame the game 5 loss on Moose alone. Matsui left 8 men on base that game, look his direction first.

Sorry but I can't say that $88.5M has been a bargain. 77-46 with a 3.86 ERA isn't bad and he's certainly had a share of some of the Yanks' successes but he's also had a share of some of their failures, too. That's all besides the point, though. At $88.5M, I'd question anyone that calls him "a bargain" since bargain usually means getting something at a lower than market price. I might be mistaken here but I do believe that Mussina's been the second-highest paid pitcher after Kevin Brown for most of the last 5 years. How's that a bargain?
