Chacon Settles

From Fox/the AP -

Pitcher Shawn Chacon and the New York Yankees agreed Friday to a $3.6 million, one-year contract and avoided a salary arbitration hearing scheduled for next week.

The 28-year-old right-hander was acquired by New York from Colorado on July 28 and went 7-3 with a 2.85 ERA in 12 starts and two relief appearances. It was a startling turnaround for the former All-Star, who was 1-7 with a 4.09 ERA for the Rockies.

In addition to his salary, Chacon can earn $100,000 in performance bonuses: $25,000 each for 180, 190, 200 and 210 innings.

Three-point-six mill. Did I call it? Or, did I call it!

In the New York "Post" article they said Chacon wasn't "a lock" for the rotation and that he'd "compete with Wright for the fifth spot." I really hope this is just the Yankees and Torre being nice to Wright. It doesn't matter if Wright tears up spring training like he did last year. What should matter is what you do during the season. Chacon was terrific and Wright was horrendous. But hearing this sends a tingle down my spine. This is just the type of decision that Torre always screws up. I can actually see him putting Chacon in the 'pen and Wright in the rotation. For whatever reason, he always makes those types of choices.

If they do that, it says that they go by salary, and not talent/production, in making their choices.

Steve, as baileywalk said, it's not "they" who make such execrable choices, it's Torre. Puhleese, let's get rid of the fantasy that, somehow, Torre doesn't get credit for the terrible roster decisions the team's made since 2001 and before. Does Cash or George write the line-up card? Do they make the Spring Training cuts? Do they value such useless flotsam as John Flaherty, Enrique Wilson, Rey Sanchez, Wayne Franklin, and allow Tony Womack to bat over 300 times? And given Wright's inability to pitch competently AND stay healthy, whose decision was it to keep sending him out there, including the last game of the season (throwing away whatever advantage we'd gotten by winning the division)? Not "they," it was the Wizard of Oz himself, unrestrained behind the emerald curtain (of tea?).

I was just reading an article (a few days old) where Torre says, "We need to replace Tom Gordon." The writer asks, quizzically, Didn't the Yanks sign Farnsworth to a three-year, 17-million-dollar contract to do that? The writer then speculates that it takes a while for Torre to trust someone, and that if Sturtze starts out hot and Farnsworth doesn't, Grand Tanyon might be the one to set up. Of course, the writer's naivete is hilarious. There's no way Sturtze will be placed ahead of Farnsworth. But it is scary how Torre often comes off like a clueless old man. Like that absentminded, senile old uncle who forgets his nieces and nephews once in a while. You have Dotel, who JUST joined the team, talking about Farnsworth as the Yankees' setup man. EVERYONE IN NEW YORK knows he's the new setup man for the Yankees. But Torre acts like he doesn't know who he is. He seems to have NO say in which players are hired here, and maybe that's why he always seems to trust the wrong people.
