Bernie The Swing Man
From Newsday:
Torre said that Bernie Williams would get some time at leftfield and rightfield during spring training ...
Some? If he gets less than 14 appearances in LF during the Spring, I would be disappointed. He needs to show that he can back-up in the OF at least to the level that Sierra did in recent years. Given the number of pitchers that the Yankees will carry, they cannot afford a guy on the bench who only hits and does not play the field.

Well, we don't have to worry about one thing -- Bernie won't be as bad as Ruben was. Ruben's style was usually to wait until the ball was almost upon him, and then dodge it before it hit him in the head (a la the just-finished CWS).
There's no guarantee that Bernie can play the corners. I remember when they stuck Lofton out there and he looked scared out of his mind. But anything that keeps Bubba off the field -- or even off the team -- is a good thing.

Eh? Bubba can cover the field. He was starting to look like he could hit late in the season, and now everybody wants to put him on the first bus to Palookaville. Bernie shouldn't be in the field. Ever. It's not good for the team. It's not good for him. Everybody talks about how much they want the team to get younger, but when you actually have a young player with potential, they want to drive him out because he's not what a veteran was 5 years ago.

Yeah, I agree; Bubba's the guy you want out there as he can cover some ground...

If Bernie plays in right, they might as well remove second base, because every single runner is going to go from first to third on him. Even Kevin Millar.
