Ruth, Mantle.....Sheffield?
The Yankees have a $13 million option on Gary Sheffield for the 2007 season. If they take it, we should see Sheffield hit his 500th career HR wearing Yankees pinstripes. Only Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle have hit "HR # 500" as a Yankee.
That's pretty good company. And, A-Rod should make it a "Gang of Four" in 2008. It will be interesting to see if Sheff gets the same hype that Clemens got going for win # 300.

After the Raffy incident, I'm going to go with no. Sheffield has been connected to Bonds in the court of public opinion so I really don't think that he will get the amount of national attention that he should. Locally though, it might be a nice little story...the "real leader of the team" going for a milestone like that.
As for resigning him, it will be real interesting to see what kind of numbers Sheff will put up - he's been declining off his peaks in the last couple of years (granted, even his "decline years" have been really good) and if it continues, we'll see if Cash takes (or should take) that risk.

After Manny, A-Rod and Vlad, name another RH batter in the AL who scares you like Sheff. There aren't many - if he's OK in 2006, I would take him back for 2007.

I agree. If 2006 is close to 2005, I would have Sheff back in a heartbeat. He still tears apart fastballs and has a pretty good eye at the plate.
