27
The number "27" has never been a good one for the Yankees.
Elliot Maddox wore it and then busted up his knee in Shea Stadium. Clowns like Jay Johnstone and Mell Hall wore it. And, then there were guys who were supposed to be good and then came to New York and stunk - like Rich Dotson, Rondell White, Kevin Brown and Butch Wynegar - who wore it.
Yes, Bob Wickman and Graeme Lloyd wore it. But, so did Todd Zeile and Aurelio Rodriguez.
I sure hope that none of the "new Yankees" for 2006 decide to wear it. I'm beginning to think it's a bad luck number. After all, how long now have the Yankees been stuck on #26?

Wynegar was actually pretty good in 1983. He's talked about a little in Pinstripe Pandemonium which is a fun/difficult read for Yankee fans of a certain age. Bill James has Wynegar as the 65th best catcher of all time.

Around 10 years ago, someone who was tight with Torborg told me that Butch's mental state, which led to him leaving town, was the result of Dave Winfield sleeping with Mrs. W.
I have no idea if it's true or not. But, if it is, that would explain a lot.

I always liked Butch. Don't know why. I was only about 7 when he came to the Yanks, but I remember that he started my whole obsession with Yankee catchers.

Steve:
Stuff like that should not be repeated, even if it is true. Since you say you don't know, shame on you. I REALLY liked this site until now. I won't be back.
