New Member of Yanks' Pen Scrapes Bottom

Ortiz ammo!

Thanks to WasWatching reader "hopbitters" for the heads-up on this news:

The Yankees bolstered their bullpen before leaving the Winter Meetings, agreeing to a two-year deal with left-hander Mike Myers.

Myers told MLB.com in a phone interview that he had agreed to terms on a two-year contract with New York, filling the much-needed role of left-handed specialist.

"I'm jacked up for it," Myers said of pitching in the Bronx. "It's going to be a lot of fun. The Yankees are a team I have wanted to play with for quite a while. I'm glad the deal was able to come to fruition."

"Mike Stanton did a phenomenal job for them during the run of World Series championships," Myers said. "I know they have gone through about 15 different left-handers in the past few years, so I'm looking forward to filling that role and helping bring a World Series title back to New York."

Check that out. Mike Myers feeling randy baby. Good.

Memo to Torre: Do not let him face any right-handed batters! Check the stats Joe!

Hmm, that sample size hasn't gotten any larger...

Setup man: check

LH specialist: check

Dump Womack: check

Backup catcher: check

Now, on to CF, stocking the bench, and finding a utility IF... And dumping either Pavano or Wright

Four years is a fair sample, no?

Raf, I'm with you on your checklist except for one thing...we still have a bullpen problem. The only differences between 2004-2005 and 2006 is that we swapped Gordon for Farnsworth and added Myers. I like the Myers signing and I like Farnsworth but our bullpen is no deeper than it was last year or the year before. It's just as thin and just as liable to be overworked, not only by Joe but by Mussina/Pavano and the rest of our rotation. In effect, we swapped Gordon for Farnsworth and expected everything to be ok. I think that's about as ridiculous a thing as Cashman's ever done.

Anyone thinking that we've addressed our bullpen for 2006 needs to convince me because from where I'm sitting, we still have Mariano, a righty setup guy and a whole lot of junk in there...

Doh!

I overlooked the pen... As is, we'll have to wait to see who gets nontendered, traded, sent down, released, whatever.

So far we have Unit, Mussina, Wang, Chacon, Pavano, Wright, Meyers, Farnsworth, Rivera, Proctor, Sturtze and Small. A 12-man staff. I don't think Torre will carry 12, given the way the lineup is set.

A lot can happen between now and then, trades, nontendering, signing to minor league deals, and whatnot...

"Total from 2002-2005"

Yup - four times the sample gives you twice the statistical power. On the other hand the split is rather less extreme over that period: delta ops of 0.45 vs 0.74.
