Heyman: Pavano Still On The Block

From Newsday:

When the Yankees publicly have said they'd like to keep Pavano, that's just them negotiating. They know he'd do better elsewhere.

At this point, if the Yankees do trade Pavano, they better get a starting pitcher in return. As bad as Pavano was last year, he still was the 38th best pitcher in the A.L. (out of all hurlers with at least 100 IP). It will be interesting to see how Cashman does handle this - if they indeed trade Carl.

Not sure what your point is? So keeping him is good? We knew that. Getting a SP for him? Good Luck? What is your point?

My point is that, even as bad as he was/is, you still need 5 starting pitchers. And, if you just let Pavano go (say, for cash and/or prospects) then you're going with Wright in his place in the rotation - which is probably more risker than going with Pavano. So, if they trade him, it makes sense to get a SP in return.

ISTM that the Yankees are not going to get an equal SP for Pavano. So, the right answer seems to be to keep him.

The Yankees best deals this this spring has been acquiring people they need. Trading Jose Contreras for the purpose of getting rid of him sure failed.

Steve, just out of curiosity, what criteria was used to deem Pavano the 38th best pitcher in the AL?

I used best RSAA of all pitchers with at least 100 IP in 2005.

Depends... They can also get a pitcher off the FA market, or they can find someone to give similar production for cheaper, be it in their system, or another team's system.

38th best in the AL? That's kinda damning with faint praise, isn't it? 14 team league, 5 starters per, that's 70 right there. 38 best would place him close to the middle.

Having said that, at this stage of the game, you may as well keep him for another season unless they somehow stumble on to Clemens
