21
OK, it's been 4 years since the number has been issued to any Yankees player. What is Stein waiting for here? Or, is the standard now a 15 year waiting period (as in the case of Guidry)?
The longer you wait, the more the chance that some mega-star is acquired and requests the number. Why put yourself in that spot?

I'll tell you one thing, if and when they do it, I'm dropping what I'm doing and going to The Stadium to see #21 join the greats in Monument Park. I'm also man enough to admit that I'll be crying my eyes out. I love Paulie.

If they request it, tell them no. It's not that hard. Sierra requested #21 when he was traded here in 1995, as did Clemens. Henderson wanted #35 when he was traded here. Wells wouldn't have minded wearing #3, Gooden #16. Johnson #51. It's not that big a deal; it happens.
No one wore #49 since Guidry retired. I don't know why it took so long to retire his number. Only 1 person wore #44 after Reggie left town. Donnie waited 2 years to get his number retired. I'm not sure why Willie Randolph's number wasn't retired; to my knowledge, no one else has worn #30.
