Trade Sheffield?
From Joel Sherman in the Post:
TRADE GARY SHEFFIELD TO ADDRESS CENTER FIELD: Sheffield remains a great hitter. But he embodies an overall Yankee problem of too much age and too many sourpusses, and the money-obsessed Sheffield is facing his walk year. The White Sox were interested in obtaining Ken Griffey during the season for his bat and now might lose their one power source, Paul Konerko, to free agency. Could Chicago start a package with defensive stud Aaron Rowand to get Sheffield?
The Blue Jays crave power and believe Alexis Rios can play center. Is there a mega-trade possible involving Sheffield for Vernon Wells? Can Sheffield be used to obtain pieces that could be redirected to Minnesota to liberate Torii Hunter?
First off, I love Gary Sheffield. He plays hard. He plays hurt. And, he's one of the best right-handed hitters that I've ever seen in my lifetime. Under normal circumstances, I would be happy to go to war with a team of nine Gary Sheffields.
But, 2006 will not be normal (maybe "everyday" is the better word?) circumstances for Sheff. He'll be in the last year of his contract. And, you can bet dollars to doughnuts (Mmmm....doughnuts) that his "next" contract will become an issue as soon as Spring Training starts. It will be "extend me or trade me" time. And, once Gary says those magic words, the Yankees lose any leverage in trade talks and it becomes give-away time.
So, why not just extend him? Here's the rub: Sheffield will be 38 at the end of next season. As great as Gary has been, do you want another old-timer on the team in 2007 and beyond? Plus, with Giambi on the team, you can't think about Sheffield as the last DH to play in the current Yankee Stadium.
Now, I'm not sure that Sheff is the bait to get a CF. But, if the Yankees can make a trade to help the team and they have to move Gary to make it happen, I may be just fine with that - given his age and contract situation.

he said he is done with playing right field. he will only DH. He also is old and he has said he will only pretty much play for the Yanks. I say keep him...

Sheffield is that rare hitter whose bat speed is so great that his hitting will not suffer much as he gets older. Think a 2nd tier Bonds (and ignore the obvious steroids issues). I say he'll still be an amazing hitter at age 40. Unfortunately, his defense is in serious decline and he probably should be a full-time DH, and with Giambi on the team the Yanks are not an ideal match for him in these next two years. I'd miss him if he were traded but you might as well shop him to see what you can get back. You think the Indians would think about parting with Sizemore and a pitching prospect for him? They could use more hitting and they have Guttierez to replace Sizemore in CF.

A team of nine Gary Sheffield's? The mind boggles.

Sheffield is far too valuable to trade. I don't care if he bitches about an extension. If a suitable replacement could be found, he'd make an outstanding DH - give him a 1 year extension, with the promise that as long as he's healthy and hitting well, he keeps on getting 1 year extensions.
CF is not a problem - just play Crosby there and take the hit on offense. Its not like it can't be made up.

The Sherman/Heyman school of knee-jerk analysis is just so special. Too much age and too many sourpusses? Oh please....has a memo circulated about this within the organization?
Bernie may be old, but he's no sourpuss...does that mean we keep him and ditch Sheff? That Cano dude looks pretty sour-pussy for a young guy...let's trade his *ss before he becomes an old sourpuss.

I'm against trading Sheff. Like you, I love him. He has that swagger. I don't see it going away. It'll still be there when he's 60. :)
Couldn't it just me "I'm in a walk year and I'm going to get my payday after this year" time? Meaning he'll be trying as hard as ever? Extend me or trade me? Out of New York when we're in the playoffs every year? I'd be surprised if Sheff did that.
Of course, I'm not sure if you knew this or not, but Sheffield's contract has a team option (13M) for '07. At his current rate of production, he's currently worth it. So, it's not simply over (new contract) after 2006.

I'm in the KEEP SHEFFIELD camp. He's a fearsome hitter. He's got a volatile side but I don't mind that. He's one of the few guys in the clubhouse that has any balls to speak his mind.
Imagine what our lineup is without Sheffield. Jeter-ARod and not much else. I'd say Giambi but honestly I'm taking a wait-and-see on how his health is for next year.
How on earth could we possibly dump Sheffield for all glove guys like Rowand or Hunter is beyond me.
As for Vernon Wells, I'll still take Sheff any day of the week. Vernon Wells has the talent to be great but not the heart. The guy is the AL version of Andruw Jones. He only works hard 4 days a week. Screw that. Keep the old sourpuss and watch him mash.
At the end of the day, this season failed because of inconsistent starting pitching from April to July, poor middle relief from July to September, and a crappy centerfielder that never should've played as many games as he did. RF was not the problem.

I can't imagine the Indians trading Sizemore for Sheffield - even straight up. Cleveland didn't build that team up to the point that it is by making trades like that...and I highly doubt that they will start. Sizemore is a good hitter, great defender, very good baserunner...he has pluses across the board and he just TURNED 23 and the Indians have him on the cheap.
Besides, the Indians already have a good DH so where would Sheff play?

Many sportswriters are morons. Many in talk radio are idiots. I've come to this conclusion after years of listening & reading their material

raf, Howard Cosell once said the Sports section is the toy department of every newspaper or news program. Sports "commentators" and reporters are not known for their overall intelligence nor their photogenic looks, which explains why Mike and the Mad Dog are on the radio. Another "genius," Bob Klapisch, who actually did go to Columbia but on a baseball scholarship, now is backtracking on the "done deal" of Cashman leaving, confessing that the media's representations of Brian's future plans are based on third-hand speculation, at best. Oh well, anything for a headline, especially if we can bash Steinbrenner simultaneously.

Actually, Mike and the angry puppy are on TV, on YES. And Mike has 'Miked Up' on Sunday night TV.

i think it would be best to keep sheff n wen matsui cums bac they can move melky 2 the bench instead of back down in the minors. Milky is a great player n has one of the best arms in baseball hes 2 valuable to trade or send down. But if sheff doesnt get an exctension thats ok... matsui could stay in lf n move milky 2 rf
