Girardi To Sleep With The Fishes?
From Newsday:
The Florida Marlins received permission from the Yankees yesterday to speak with bench coach Joe Girardi about their managerial job, Girardi said.
Girardi, who is believed to be a favorite for the job, expects to interview with the Marlins during an upcoming day off. He spoke with Florida owner Jeffrey Loria last winter about becoming their bench coach before taking the same job with the Yankees.
This could be interesting. It's a happy/sad thing on Joe. Happy for him to get a chance and sad to see him go. But, the bigger question is: Who's next? I do not believe that White or Sojo becomes bench coach. Mattingly maybe? But, then, you need another batting coach.
Would Piniella take it? If he would, do you think Torre would like that? No way, if you ask me. How about Lee Mazz? Would they take him back? Bucky Dent is in Columbus, would he get the call?
Tom Nieto is the Mets big league "catching coach." I think Torre has a soft spot for him. Would they ask the Mets for permission to talk to him (should Girardi go)? Then again, maybe it was Tom Pagnozzi that Torre had the soft spot for? Maybe I'm confusing them?
One reason why this could be interesting is just the question of "Does Torre get to pick?" After all, that's how they got Showalter out of town - by not allowing him to pick his coaching staff.
Sometimes a small news story like this ends up being a bigger deal in the grand scheme of things. I wonder if this might be the case here.

Steinbrenner's just the kind of A-hole to use this opening to get Joe out. Wait till he sees what happens to his "beloved" Yanks when he forces Joe out. If we thought this year was lousy, wait until next year without Joe, when we DON'T rebound from 11-17 and instead end up 71-91. Then George will wonder where all those 4 million people went. In a sick way, I almost hope he dares. Just so he can get the bitch-slap he's had coming to him for years.

I've seen too many managers over the years. Why should I care about this one?
The next manager that comes in, if the Yanks flop, it'll be because of poor roster construction, and because everyone got old at once.
I do agree that George needs a bitch-slap, tho (:

interesting take on this by you guys since Torre didn't choose anyone on his original coaching staff in 1996. instead, over the years he culled the staff of people he didn't like and replaced them with "acceptable" replacements: Chambliss and Cardenal were jettisoned, replaced by Gary Denbo (a Jeter-Posada-Tino choice) and Lee Mazzilli (a Torre choice). Gerardi replaced Randolph who replaced Zimmer...none of these were Torre choices. so, like, what are we talking about here anyway? After all, Mattingly is a George choice. And Buck Showalter? He was and is paranoid. He's outstayed his welcome everywhere he's been...he's not long for Texas now either.

Johnny - you really think the MGR has no input on his bench coach?

Steve, I'm saying the opposite. I guess I'm being too flip with my earlier post. Torre hired Cardenal and Chambliss, both having coached for him in St. Louis. Both were fired by Torre not George or Tampa. He hired Lee Mazzilli...not a Tampa guy. He fired Gary Dembo, a Tampa guy. To suggest that he hasn't had sufficient control over his own coaching staff is disingenous at best. If George could "pull his chain" as you all suggest, why is Mel Stottlemyre still pitching coach? Is there a spy on his staff like Billy Connors was on Buck's? The man is sacrosanct. Let's stop the pity party for Joe. At least he doesn't get the bum's rush like Ken Macha just got from that other saint, Billy Beane.

An crazy as this may sound, does Torre even need a bench coach? Can we confirm that (besides working with Posada on catching and serving as a sounding board) Girardi actually did ANYTHING this year?
If the answer to that is 'no', then I say let him pick whoever he wants. Tom Pagnozzi, Todd Zeile, Donovan Osbourne . . . hell he can bring in Felix Jose for all I care.

I don't think Girardi has done one productive thing all season, but what the hell do I know? OK, Jorge is playing a lot better defense. Girardi probably has something to do with that.

I always vote for Pascual Perez in these situations. He could really bring some new enthusiasm to the clubhouse. Now, if we could just find him.

When he was suspended in 1992, I felt terrible. I was looking forward to watching him & Melido pitch. together.
The man was a character, the likes of which we will never, ever see again.
