Fighting Whammies
Newsday has a good story today on Yankees fans superstitions.
They didn't print my worst one. I'll only tell it to someone if they tell me theirs. How's that for a tease?

Nice to see you in there with Cecilia, who is an acquaintance of mine, a close friend of my very best friend.
I don't have any superstitions, but if I did I would definitely share it with you so that I could hear your worst one. Does that count?

Nah, Satch - I want dirt!

I seem to have more superstitions when I go to the game than when I watch at home. I have to walk the same path from the parking deck to the deli, order the same sandwich, get the same drink, and cross the street at the same corner to get to the gate. also, if someone is going to the game with me, I have to sit in a particular seat (#23). on my way back to the car, I have to give a dollar to the guy playing guitar along river ave (i plan on doing a little post about him soon). With all of the money I've given him this year, I should be able to deduct it from my taxes.

OK, here's my "bad" one.
I cannot leave my car with the radio tuned to the Yankees station - albeit 880 now or 770 back in the day. Before I shut the radio and the car off, I have to switch from the Yankees station to any other station (it doesn't matter).
I can't tell you why - because I don't know why (other than the fact that I'm nuts, I suppose) - but, I just feel that, if I get out of the car with the Yankees station being tuned on the radio, that they're going to lose the game (even if they're leading at the time).
I have no idea when this started - it's been a long time now. And, it's something of a problem - because my wife wants to break something over my head every time I go to change the station before we leave the car.
I know, I need help. But, it's for a good cause!

That's odd, I have the same thing with the radio station. Weird, huh? I also can't listen to Mike and the Mad Dog (afternoons on WFAN in NYC) the day after a Yankee win.

Holy crap Steve, I have the same radio thing! (I have so many of these little quirks that they've become second-nature and I forget I have them sometimes.) Except the AM station needs to be set to 1050 before I get out of the car. I actually forgot to switch it back on Wednesday night and I blamed that for the loss. I didn't realize this until I went to work the next morning and I couldn't forgive myself. And to take it even further, I have 3 preset groups on my radio (2 FM and 1 AM) and each group needs to be set to a certain station before I get out of my car.

I am NOT alone! How cool!

This is embarressing, but my wife loves it...
If I'm not ironing at the start of a ball game, the Yankees are going to lose. I have actually wrinkled / mangled shirts so I'd have something to iron at the start of a game.
This started game 5 of the Yankees-Atheletics ALDS, where Jeter made THAT PLAY to throw out Jeremy Giambi at the plate...

I guess my mantra superstition made the reporters think I was the biggest freak so they asked to take my picture. I wasn't getting home until late last night so I didn't make it in. Oh well, I'm still the #1 freak in the article. GO YANKS!

Chuck - do you accept take-ins? You could make a few bucks and the Yankees could use the wins!
Posted by: Steve Lombardi at October 7, 2005 12:45 PM
MJ - where is it? Just the print version?
Posted by: Steve Lombardi at October 7, 2005 12:47 PM
Ooops, I just realized that MJ said it didn't make it. I need glasses.

I don't get to Yankee games these days (it's a bitch of a drive from Toledo), but my superstition is to not buy a beer until after the first inning.

A few year back, I was at a game where they were playing (IIRC) the Indians. El Duque had a no hitter going. I refused to move from my seat - for anything. It was getting to the point where you had to consider the no-no when my wife saw a hotdog vendor. The second that I stood up, Duque allowed a hit. It's hard sometimes to uphold a Stadium superstition - it's so much easier at home. But, if you can do it, you should. Good for you rbj.

Steve - my neurotic behavior is in the online version. The only thing that didn't make it was the picture.
Randy Johnson to the rescue. Come on Big Unit.

I don't have a superstition so much as a habit. In any game where we're leading, unless it's a blowout, I take a shower in the 8th when the other team is batting. That's the only way I can get totally away from things without the ability to check the score. My nerves just can't handle the 8th, but the 9th is fine- if we can't win with Mo, that's the breaks.
I can still remember taking a shower in the 8th of game 7 in the 2001 Series. I should've just stayed in there the rest of the night.

That was a great game; I couldn't pull myself away from the tube
