Wells Takes Shot At A-Rod
From The Herald - David Wells says:
``David (Ortiz) right now is in a league all by himself,'' Wells said last night at Tropicana Field, where the Red Sox lost to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 7-4, in the finale of a three-game series.
``There's no (expletive) question what he means to this team. (The MVP) is David Ortiz. The guy's as humble as (expletive). He jokes around every day and doesn't say a bad thing about anybody. He makes people laugh on the bus and at the park, and if we're going to talk about defense, let's talk about (clubhouse contributions), too. He's not going to say that he's working out before everyone else wakes up in the morning.
``If they're going to do that and personality comes into play, he's got it unanimously.''

Uh, maybe he can't say it because he's not doing that? Or, maybe he doesn't have to do that since he's not required to field or expected to run during games?
You don't need to be in shape to do stand-up on a bus, right?

Sounds like a certain Barry Lamar Bonds has some hardware he should be returning...
Wells (and I thought it wasn't possible) has become even MORE of a moron since he joined the chowderheads...

Bill Madden was on Mike and the angry pooch yesterday and Madden (no surprise to me) said right now he'd vote for Ortiz, the DH thing doesn't bother him. Of course if the DH were a Yankee it would bother him. Both Mike and Chris agreed that Ortiz is the AL MVP.
Madden did say he would wait until the season was over to finally vote, leaving the door open a bit.
So going through the grind of being a full time player, and playing at a high level at 3rd base, means nothing, at least in 2005 it seems. We'll see....

Same Madden who voted for Jim Rice over Ron Guidry for MVP in 1978 because everyday players trump once a week pitchers in value and then in 1986 voted for Roger Clemens over Don Mattingly for precisely the opposite reason. Why do we waste our time taking anything Madden says seriously. His cracked column on Gene Michael-George-Cashman-Tampa was another heaping helping of garbage. I would believe the waiter at the now defunct Malio's on Yankees matters sooner than I'd believe Madden.

maybe Wells should worry less about the MVP vote and more about the fact that they woke up this morning out of the playoffs.

There's nothing wrong with a DH for MVP. I would have given it to Edgar. He was that much better than everyone else, defense or no. Ortiz isn't. If it were between Ortiz and a 1B, I wouldn't give it a second thought to the DH thing, but it isn't. It's between a DH and a GG-caliber 3B. Their offense is comparable. Their defense isn't. On the other hand, Patrick makes a pretty good argument without needing to explain himself in a long, rambling paragraph.

Patrick is exactly correct: If the award really is "relative value to the team," Rivera is so far ahead of Ortiz and A-Rod it's silly.
