The Voice

The Herald Community has a nice story on Bob Sheppard:

At more than 4,000 home games over the last 55 seasons - better than half of the team's history - Sheppard has introduced each batter, pitcher and fielder from his booth on the loge level behind home plate. He is the public address announcer, and his clear, distinctive tones are as much a part of the team as the pinstriped uniform.

OK, there's got to be a way to get people like Sheppard into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Anyone who gets a paycheck associated with working in baseball for 55 years, and, who is (in a way) part of the team's brand in the minds of the baseball public, should be in Cooperstown.

I have a nice story to share about Mr.Sheppard :

I recently went to a wedding of a friend of mine who is a big Yank fan. I guess he wrote a letter to Sheppard before getting married asking for a favor, and Bob did it for him. My pal sent a blank tape to him with a letter explaining what he'd like him to say on it. Well, to cut it short, when the wedding party was officially introduced into the reception, the voice coming over the speakers at the club was none other than the Yankee PA man leading the whole party in.
I was impressed to say the least, and don't think many guys would have done that - at least not for free.
I agree with the HOF nomination. If writers and play by play guys get in - so should PA announcers who have obviously given their lives to their trade.

Well, at the very least, his microphone is in there.

I'd love to be there for the speech, if he were to be inducted

I went to a (football) Giants game last year, completely forgetting that he still announced for them. I got all warm, fuzzy hearing his voice in the middle of November.
