Fashion Wars

I hate you.
You hate me.

Somebody's getting rich here, can't you see?

So much venom. Man, that last weekend this year is going to be interesting.

I honestly wouldn't wear anything like that. I like to go by the general rule of sticking to what you like, not what you don't. Plus, some of them are so... vulgar. I'd never wear anything like that. The "worst" shirt I have is "The Curse Lives." Never wore it. No longer valid, anyway. Or... is it? ;)

My brother has a "Beat Boston" shirt, which isn't vulgar (I view so and so suc*s to be vulgar, although they certainly get much worse, viewing that last link - I'd honestly be embarassed to wear the more vulgar ones) and I wouldn't wear that, even. Beat New York, Believe in Boston, etc. are cool, though.

On that last link, can you believe they actually made a t-shirt to commemorate one regular season game in August where we lost 22-0? That is ... really sad/stupid. We lose a game in August and we get blown out and it's a big deal. I guess we should be flattered? Lots of people who pretend to understand baseball... don't. It's like us making up t-shirts mentioning the performances of Foulke and Schilling this year, only that would make more sense. I can think of much more creative t-shirts.

Could make one playing off of the nickname I gave Varitek after he did what he did to A-Rod. The Masked Man. As in, when you go to Boston, look out for The Masked Man. Or one that says "2004 Red Sox = Yankees, Jr." Or any number of other things.

An Obi Wang t-shirt would be nice. ;)

A story - I moved to Boston in fall '99. The night before ALCS game 3 (Clemens-Pedro), I went to Quincy Market with friends to go to a bar. Outside of this bar, a sign said (more or less): "New Yorkers not welcome - if you have a NY drivers license, DON'T COME HERE"

At first I thought it had to be a joke. Friendly rivalry kinda stuff, right? But it wasn't. And that wasn't the only bar with such a sign.

Since then, nothing surprises me. Not the Patriots leading 1.5 million people in a "Yankees suck" chant during the parade to celebrate their first Super Bowl win. Not the infant-sized t-shirts that said "Jeter sucks, A-Rod swallows" - available in pink for girls - that I saw actual parents pay actual money for, and then dress their young ones in.

Maybe its because of my experience, but I hate all that kind of crap, personally.

Man, we've come a long way since 1997.

Hung out in the bleachers, wearing my Yankee cap. Had no problem. Sox fan bought me a beer, actually. After the game was over (Gooden started, got shelled early, Willie Banks came in to hold them, Yanks came back to win), I went to a bar in the neighborhood. The name has been lost to time, but I popped in for a couple of postgame drinks. Left a couple of tickets to the following night's game, and shot for home.

Didn't encounter anything remotely resembling a problem

I have to admit- I actually like the Steinbrenner Runined Baseball shirt.

Same here, Shaun. I forgot about those t-shirts. That's just really... tasteless. But, on the flip side, if I ever see anyone wearing it, I can just say "hey, that's an idiot." If all idiots wore the same t-shirt, it'd make it easier for the rest of us.

Very true, Patrick, very true. After all, folks like to call themselves "idiots" up here.

Raf, the worst part of my story is this - the bar stuff happened 10/16/99. Twenty days earlier - 9/26/99 (thank God for retrosheet!) - I went to a Sox/O's game at Fenway. Like you, I sat in the bleachers in Fenway, wore my Yankee cap, and had no problems. Had many nice conversations with Sox fans. Wasn't taunted once. A lot changed in 20 days.

I wouldn't wear that crap either. Not only that, but if you're not right close up it looks like you'd be wearing Red Sox stuff. I can't tell the difference between a Yankees hat and a Yankees Hater hat until I'm about 15 feet away.

No self-respecting Yankee fan would buy that crap. I want the Sox to lose to the Yankees, otherwise I could care less.
