Posada The Problem For Unit?
The Times sure makes a case:
John Flaherty will catch Randy Johnson on Sunday for the 13th time this season. In 12 games with Flaherty, Johnson is 6-1 with a 3.84 earned run average. In 13 games with Jorge Posada, he is 5-6 with a 4.55 E.R.A.
Joe Torre said Flaherty had a better feel for Johnson's mechanics, which often need adjusting during games. Flaherty stays on Johnson about keeping his arm angle high, and the results have usually been good.
"We're not hurting Jorge's feelings, because he seems to understand," Torre said. "Because Randy is so big, if things get out of rhythm a little bit, you can pick it up if you see him a lot."
Flaherty has caught all but one of Johnson's starts since June 11.
I think many Yankees fans expected Unit to be something like 12-3 at this stage of the season, when the Yankees traded for him last winter.
Perhaps it's time to consider a new starting catcher for next year? Posada can be traded. I wonder if Showalter would take Jorge in exchange for Rod Barajas and Gary Matthews Jr.?

I like Posada. I'm not really in a rush to get rid of him.
Much less because of this I mean, we've had a number of starters pitch well this year (Wang, Mussina, Small, Chacon) with Posada there. Besides, 3.84 isn't that great, especially when you consider what was expected. 6-1 with a 3.84 and 5-6 with a 4.55 basically means that he had noticeably better run support when Posada caught, I would imagine.
I don't want to disguise or excuse Randy's disappointing performance by implicating Posada. 3.84 would have been very disappointing. Not as much as 4.55, but not that far away. And it would seem likely that if Flaherty would have caught him the times that Posada did, his ERA with Flaherty would have been higher. So, it's got to be on Randy.

Hey, I have a idea. Maybe, it's not Posada at all, but rather the degenerating back and arm strength of a 41 year old power pitcher.
Just a thought. It just seems to me that Clemens, Mariano, Wells, Mussina, Petite, and other countless pretty good to great pitchers did not have a problem with Posada - in fact, many of them flourished with him behind the plate. Perhaps, Posada is Randy Johnsons excuse. The guy is a lefty, and if Posada's arm is the question (which I think is silly, because he still has a pretty good one, not to mention the Yanks pitch out more than any team I've ever seen), he should do a better job of looking guys back to the bag, and not giving up important homeruns.
Stop blaming Posada, and start putting the blame where it belongs.

There will be some catchers available in free agency, like Benji Molina. I hat to break up the "core" of the old team but I also hate having Benji injure us all the time. He might be a better bet at least for 3-4 more years. I don't know if the Rangers will give up Matthews Jr. Maybe Laynce Nix is expendable due to Matthews good play. Now that would be a trade!

homer, homer, homer, single, single, homer...and still two outs to go for Randy Johnson.
Good thing Flarhety's keeping Johnson in control better than Posada would.

Jorge might do better in a situation where there are dual catchers. Posad & Molina? Anything's an upgrade over sub-Mendoza Line Flaherty.

Why would the Rangers do something like that?

Think of all the pitchers that have failed with the Yankees since Posada took over full time. Coincidence or..........?

Yeah, It's Posada's fault that a 20 year major leaguer like Johnson can't throw the pitch he wants when and where he wants. I can see a catcher affecting rookie pitchers but a veteran pitcher has got to be able to take control. If Posada does something they don't want they should tell him, like the man above said Pettite, Cone, Wells, El Duque, Clemmens how come those guys never had a problem with Jorgie's catching?

Probably coincidence. A pitcher puts in enough time here, his numbers will fall in line with his career numbers. So it's likely that if they failed with the Yankees it's because they were never really that good, or they had a bad year.

Also some players tend to press in NY/Boston/Playoffs/Big situations because there is so much more attention. Some players relish it a la Reggie, some players don't.
