Looking Ahead

I know this is too far head to matter, but, assuming that the Yankees stay in rotation, and do not skip any starts, and that rain out game is made up on the next trip to Camden, then in that last series of the year - at Fenway Park - the Yankees scheduled pitchers will be, in this order, Mussina, Chacón, and Randy Johnson.

Yes, that's Randy Johnson in the last game of the season - at Fenway Park.

And, Jaret Wright would be the guy if there's a tie-breaker game.

But, again, a lot can happen in five and a half weeks.........

Steve, I don't know if there is any truth to this, but did the Chicago Whitesox request to major league baseball that the rain game with my Red Sox be cancelled on account of a forfeit by them? I guess, since they are on a long series of games there (19days in a row), it's against the collective bargaining agreement to play twenty, so they have asked for a forfeit. This has big implications, as it gives Boston the win.
Personally, I think it's because of the hot head of Guillen and what he's got against the Yanks. I don't think it would have mattered much, since the Red Sox were probably going to play their A-Ball team anyhow - but another blogger I was having this conversation with made a good point by saying that anything could have happened.

Yes, Chicago wanted to forfeit but if the game that was missed has playoff implications I heard that it would have to be played.

Another person made a great point that if the Sox played their "A-Team" against them they may have a great shot at winning. A bunch of guys wanting to prove themselves against a team that doesn't NEED or WANT to play that game.

Why would the Sox want to play the normal team if it's not needed to do so? If the playoffs are on the line, would you expect the Sox to run the Portland team out there because ChiSox did not want to play?
Trust me, I'd much rather just have the win. No matter what, it's not cool of Guillen to do if he's doing for reasons we all expect he is. I'm sure he would much rather play Oakland or Cleveland than the Yanks, and he's going to do all he can to make that happen. To that I say boo - to the W, I say giddyup.
If it has to be played, and it has implications surrounding the Yanks, I would guess that either team involved will do whatever they need to do, or lack thereof.

This is interesting - because the only thing that I saw was that the Bosox did not want to play that game: http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=98064

***The prospect of playing 30 days in a row without a break is the fallout from yesterday's washout at Fenway Park.

Because the only off day for the remainder of the season shared by the Red Sox and White Sox is Labor Day, Sept. 5, that places nearly all the onus of playing that day on the players. Union rules prevent players from having to play more than 20 games in a row without their consent, and before the Red Sox headed to Detroit last night, representative Johnny Damon did not make it sound like the game would be played.

``If we need to play it, we'll play it but it's still definitely to be decided,'' Damon said. ``We would like to avoid the 5th.

``Right now, we have to vote on it, and we definitely want the day off.'' ***

As long as Boston and Chicago take their divisions, I think the ONLY way Chicago does NOT play the Yanks, is if the West division winner has a better record then the White Sox. Unlikely.
