Trading Places

The bodies have quickly started flying around, huh? That happens when you're 11-15.

So, in the end, the Yankees got one year out of Steve Karsay (2002). Oh, well, that's one more year than they have gotten out of Jaret Wright so far. I hope that Wright will not replace Karsay on the "getting paid and doing nothing for years because of injury and therefore was a stupid signing" list.

I'm feeling good about Robinson Cano. I think this is like Donnie coming up in 1983. I think the kid will do fine and he's the 2B here for the next ten years. And, some Saturday AM soon, you will pick up the morning paper and see "Robinson Cano The Man Friday" after he has a big game on some Friday evening.

The Womack to LF move is killing me. What does it say about your depth when you have to move your starting 2B to the OF when your CF goes down? Now, I have been noticing that Womack has had some issues with throws to 1B on DPs. He's been very wide to the right on more than one occasion. But, given the way that the Yankees 1B, DH, and catchers have been hitting, you cannot carry Womack's bat in LF. Something has to happen here. A trade must be in the works.

Personally, I blame Giambi for all this. If he could hit and play the field, then you do not need three 1Bs on your roster and then you could have another OF. But, because you need Tino for his glove and then Phillips (at least for a while) for his bat versus LHP (to spell Tino), you have this situation of three roster spots covering one starting position. That's a problem.

As far as Bernie, well, ladies and gentlemen, give the man a hand. I believe we are now seeing the end of his Yankee career. A move to the DL, surgery, and us never seeing him again in pinstripes would not shock me.

And, now Unit may go on the DL too? Five of the last six years, he's made 35 starts. Now, he's here and already missing turns. Things sure do fall apart quickly sometimes......just like the bodies start to fly.

I'm in total agreement with Womack in LF. There is just no possible way that this can be a permanent solution.

However, if a trade is in the works having Womack come off the bench at least makes the bench somewhat better than it is.

Agreed JJay. Womack might not like a UT role - but, it's the best for the team.

I have to think that the Royals, Reds, Rockies, or Pirates have an OF that they could be talked into dealing - and that would help the Yankees OF situation.

"However, if a trade is in the works having Womack come off the bench at least makes the bench somewhat better than it is."

Yep--one of the things not discussed in all of this (and, by the way, your observation about Giambi tying up three roster spots for 1B is spot on) is the need to jettison Rey Sanchez. The Yankees have two worthless IF players (Sanchez and Womack), but at least Womack can play a little OF and he has speed. If the Yankees go with Cano at 2B and they trade for an OF, then Womack should be on the bench rather than Sanchez. But dear God, please not both of them (though a bench with Flaherty, Crosby, Womack, and Sanchez might be historic in its craptacularity).

I always wondered about the value of a Sanchez or Enrique Wilson, etc. To have them play the last few innings of a game is no biggie. But, if you had to play them for a month, well, that's painful. So, the question is - if the only positive they offer is insurance over the last copule of innings of a game, why carry them at all?
